Erewash Walking Month – Week 3

Here’s what is happening this week – walks for everyone to join in with:

Tuesday 19th May

Free accessible walk for people living with long term health conditions

Run by Sofa2Stroll at Straws Bridge Nature Reserve

Time: 10.30 am – 12.30 pm

Start and finish: Straws Bridge Nature Reserve, Ilkeston, DE7 5FG (main car park near the information board)

Distance: Approx. 0.5 – 2 miles 

Parking: Yes, free car park

Toilets: Yes

Accessibility: 0 stiles

Walk description: Monthly Sofa2Stroll+ walks which are gentle, inclusive and created to help you feel supported, connected and confident whilst out in nature.   

Booking: You can book via Eventbrite or just turn up at the start of the walk.

Nutbrook and Woodside Circular

Run by Nutbrook Walking for Health

Time: 10.30 am – 12.30 pm 

Start and finish: The POD, Summerfields Way South, Ilkeston, DE7 9JJ 

Distance: Approx. 4.2 miles

Parking: Yes, at the POD

Toilets: No

Accessibility: 0 stiles  

Walk description: A steady walk and chance to chat with a mixed group whilst enjoying being out in the countryside

Wednesday 20th May

Growing Lives – Towpath Trail 

Run by Growing Lives 

Time: 10 am – 12.30 pm

Start and finish: 1 Grenville Drive, Ilkeston, DE7 8HT

Distance: Approx. 5 miles

Parking: On street parking only

Toilets: At the start and finish of the walk

Accessibility: 0 stiles

Walk description: A five-mile circular walk along Erewash and Nottingham Canal passing Bennerley Viaduct with refreshments at Growing Lives after the walk. 

Booking: Booking essential. Maximum numbers 25 on a first come first served basis.

Bat Watch at Bennerley Viaduct 

Run by The Friends of Bennerley Viaduct

Time: 8.30 – 10 pm  

Start and finish: Bennerley Viaduct, Aswsworth Road, Ilkeston, DE7 8PX (Access via Newtons Lane, off Awsworth Road (what3words played.reds.whites).  If you are coming from Nottingham (A6096 Shilo Way) turn right onto Newton’s Lane, then turn right again just before the railway bridge.  If you are coming from Ilkeston, it is your first left after the railway bridge. The gate to the lane will be open. Drive down the tarmac lane until you arrive underneath the viaduct. Volunteers will be on hand to direct parking.  

Distance: Approx. 1.5 miles

Accessibility: 0 stiles  

Walk description: Come and see bats near Bennerley Viaduct at dusk, detector devices available to use.

Time: 10.30 am – 12.30 pm

Start and finish: Elvaston Castle Country Park, Borrowash Road, Elvaston, Derby, DE72 3EP (main car park near the wooden bird carving)

Distance: Approx. 1 – 2 miles 

Parking: Yes, in main car park but charges apply

Toilets: Yes  

Accessibility: 0 stiles

Walk in the Clouds

Run by Erewash Ramblers

Time: 10.30 am – 1.30 pm

Start and finish: Sandiacre Library car park,Doncaster Avenue, Sandiacre, NG10 5FJ

Distance: Approx. 6 miles

Parking: Yes, at Sandiacre Library

Toilets: No

Accessibility: 6 – 10 stiles

Walk description: Over Stoney Clouds Local Nature Reserve across Erewash Golf course up to Stanton by Dale and back via northern Risley.  

Booking: No booking is required.

Elvaston Night Walk

Walk description: An evening walk in and around Elvaston Castle Country Park.

Rutland Track Walk

Run by Ilkeston Track Walk

Time: 10 – 11.30 am 

Start and finish: Rutland Sports Park, West End Drive, Ilkeston, DE7 5GH

Distance: 400 metre laps round the athletics track

Walk description: An accessible walk round the athletics track, for members of the community

Hike to Ockbrook School and Church

Run by Ockbrook and Borrowash Parish Council

Start and finish: Coop car park, Victoria Avenue, Borrowash, DE71 3HE

Distance: Approx. 4.23 miles

Parking: On street parking only

Walk description: An easy hike covering most of the parish, with accessible paths suitable for all skill levels.

Shipley Lock Loop  

Run by Monday Strollers in collaboration with Move More Cotmanhay

Time: 10.15 am – 12.30 noon

Start and finish: Victoria Park Leisure Centre, Manners Road, Ilkeston, DE7 8AT

Distance: Approx. 5.25 miles

Parking: On street parking only behind Victoria Park Leisure Centre

Toilets: At the start and finish of the walk

Accessibility: Approximately 1 – 5 stiles

Walk description: Meet new friends enjoying the fresh air and wildlife as we stroll down to Shipley Lock and along the Erewash Canal.
